July 2021
The past few months have been emotional and frustrating for the team. As another lockdown was enforced, we were unable to run program or meet with any of our campers and volunteers. And along with this, we were struck with the sudden news of the loss of a team member, who was more like a brother to us all; the whole camp community took time to heal and comfort each other.
It is hard when a community that thrives on action and relationships, is forced to stay apart and stay put. But we are learning to find our strength to be still, in God. It does bring to mind Paul who was confined to a cell for years, but still choose to connect and encourage the growing christians through his letters. This has been our focus through the second wave – staying connected.
PROGRAM
With restrictions still being enforced, we were unable to run any programs on site. But we did manage to run online sessions for our campers. With the hopes of addressing issues that campers were facing in the midst of the pandemic, we met up for an evening with the boys and girls separately. We spent time unwinding and laughing over a few games and then gave the campers time to share what was on their heart. It was so good to be able to see their faces, after such a long break, and we felt so encouraged to keep going as a team, and serve each other through the storm.
FOLLOW UP
Over the past few months, our volunteers have taken the responsibility of calling and checking on campers every week. This has helped us stay connected to them and provide help and support when necessary.
Girl Chat
Before the lockdown began, we managed to meet up with our girl campers. This was an initiative we pursued after our girls camp this year. We felt they needed guidance and encouragement in their goals for the year, and so we decided to meet with them once a month. We also continue to connect with them via WhatsApp where we provide devotions everyday.
VOLUNTEERS
When it comes to our team, this year was definitely one of the hardest. We lost our beloved Samuel Vijay on the 22nd of April. Even though we know that he is with the One that he loves the most, and is probably getting everyone singing and dancing in worship to God, it has still been such tough news to accept and address. Sam was gifted in worship, faithful in character and loud in his service. We will miss him terribly and hope to continue to nourish the relationships and friendships he started at Camp Canaan.
With a heavy heart, and a sense of emptiness in our team, we continue to take the year that God has for us. We continue to grow in our leadership and in our love for each other, through our weekly team meetings, and catch up calls with the campers.
